The course, being on forest land, is a public one. It is laid out over the old hunting grounds of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I; where the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin roamed in the 1730’s and where golf was first played in Essex on an officially recognised course in 1888.
It is the only golf club in Essex Golf Union with the Royal Title. It is also only one of the two Royal clubs played over a public golf course; the other being Royal and Ancient at St.Andrews
The club has a close and friendly relationship with the City of London Corporation which administers the course.
