At 6,114 yards off the back tees, and in an undulating parkland setting, the course at first sight seems a relatively easy test of golf. With narrow fairways and small greens there are many scorecards that tell a different story. What makes the course more difficult than it looks? There are 5 par threes on the course, four of which are over 180 yards, and many of the members think that scoring well on these is the secret to having a good card.
The 14th at 197 yards over a dell, through a gap between trees in a copse, is often singled out as the pick of these. Other holes of interest include the 1st, a slight dog-leg right par 4 where a tee shot right can be blocked out by the hedge running the length of the 10th, or a tee shot left can mean being obstructed by a line of trees bordering the 2nd. The 8th, a short par 4, is reachable from the tee for the longer hitters, but put it left and you are in trees, favour the right and the natural slope of the ground will run your ball into more trees.
At 600 yards off the white tee, the 17th is one of the longest holes in Britain. A good drive into a natural valley and it will still take two more good blows to reach the small green cut into a bank.
