Sutton Coldfield Golf Club Warwickshire

Being one of the rare true Heathland courses in the UK and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie who is most famous for his involvement with the Augusta National Golf Club in the USA.

Sutton Coldfield Golf Club is one of the most prestigious private members clubs in the Midlands. It was founded in 1889 and two years later moved to the present location within Sutton Park. The Park is one of our country’s Recognised Historic Parks and Gardens and also has National Nature Reserve status.

The land was given to the people of Sutton Coldfield by King Henry VIII in 1528 following a request from Bishop Vesey, who was both a local man and friend of the King. The park is currently managed by Birmingham Council following the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield’s annexation in 1974 with the demise of the West Midlands as a unitary authority.

The nature of the heathland makes this course one of the best, if not the best, all year free draining course within a radius of 50 miles. Ideal for Winter playing and perfect for a challenging Summer game.

Although the course is laid out over common ground, the club has hosted a number of important events including the Midland Open and the Second City Tournament. The course has fielded in the past such players as Mark James, Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo.

During the club’s centenary we were proud to welcome to its playing ranks, Vijay Singh, Sam Torrance and Lara Davies amongst others.

The course boasts mature oaks and provides tight lines on holes nearer the clubhouse, whilst in mid-round the fairways are more open but fringed with thick gorse and heather. Unusally the 5th, 6th and 7th provide 3 consecutive par-5’s. It’s “Y” shaped layout means that the front and back 9 can provide a very different, testing, but enjoyable experience.
