Sonning Golf Club Berkshire
HERITAGE
Sonning Golf Club is 100 years old and has an impressive pedigree. One of the ‘Great Triumvirate’ and a 5 time Open champion, JH Taylor, designed the original layout with later input from Harry Colt. Colt, of course, was responsible for some of the greatest courses around the world including Wentworth, Royal St Georges and Royal Melbourne and his influence very much remains at Sonning today.
The clubs first professional was Abe Mitchell whose image graces the top of the Ryder Cup. Max Faulkner, Open Champion in 1951, was the Club’s assistant professional from 1936 to 1937 and Harold Hilton, who was British Amateur Champion four times and Open Champion twice, was the Club’s first Secretary.
Sonning was the scene of the first Aerial Golf match which took place in February 1930 between Captain G.A. Pennington and the club professional at the time, A.J. Young and it still keeps its close links with the RAF today.
THE GOLF COURSE
Sonnings original layout was designed by JH Taylor with later input from Harry Colt. The course measures 6,329 yards and has a par of 70 and a SSS of 71. It generally plays longer than its yardage due to the elevations of several greens and fairways and although originally a heath land course, there is now an abundance of mature trees and shrubs that line its fairways.
The greens are always true and fast, and will test the very best of players. Peter Alliss has described our seventeenth hole as “one of the best short holes in the South of England”. The course is always in excellent condition throughout the year, and as the Michelin Guide says “It is well worth a detour”.
Martin Hawtree, the renowned International golf course architect, has redesigned Sonning’s original Taylor/Colt layout and has produced an impressive new 18th hole that finishes in front of the clubhouse. With an excellent practice and short game area, Sonning can provide some of the best facilities in the South of England.
