The magnificent Old Thorns golf course winds its way through the verdant rolling hills of the estate and offers fantastic views at every turn. Mature trees, natural springs, lakes and testing bunkers give real character to the course which, while kind to the less experienced golfer, holds some surprises for the golfer who enjoys a challenging round.
The par-72 course has an illustrious history. Plans for its development started in 1976 and came to fruition in 1981, when Peter Alliss – now honorary president of the estate – and Dave Thomas completed the course they had so carefully planned. On July 10, 1982, a high-profile opening fourball was played, in front of a large crowd, between four of the greatest golfers in history. Isao Aoki won the event with a score of 69, beating Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and the then Open champion, Bill Rogers.
