Welcome to Royal Winchester Golf Club The “Royal”, being a private members club, is pleased to welcome visiting golfers, societies and corporate events. Founded in 1888, it is one of the oldest, and the only Royal club, in Hampshire. Relocated to it’s current position in 1901, it is just a couple of miles from the centre of Winchester, the ancient capital of England.
The course is a testing and enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities, made more difficult when the wind blows – with a par of 71 (SSS 70 on white tees) it is 6216 yards long! Occupying one of the highest points in the area there are some spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Built on chalk downs the course drains exceptionally well and is very rarely closed due to heavy rainfall.
The clubhouse, completed in 1995, replacing the building completely destroyed by fire in 1994, provides exceptional facilites for members and visitors alike. A warm welcome awaits you Why “Royal” Winchester Golf Club? On January 2nd 1913, King George V formally granted us our title of ROYAL Winchester Golf Club after the Duke of Connaught (seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria – allegedly her favourite son) gave verbal permission as our Patron in 1893. The title was contested by the Home Office in 1912 and the matter was resolved by King George V endowing us with the title officially.
Societies are very welcome at Royal Winchester Golf Club.
We offer all day Society and Corporate Days on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the year for between 12 and 60 golfers and on Tuesdays an 18 hole Society Package for between 12 and 40 from 12 noon onwards. We can also offer the occasional small society or group on a Friday morning.
