“Just where the Downs begin to dip towards Freshwater Gate there is a Golf Course. I saw a man mowing a green: he looked so remote up there he might have been mowing a patch of sky. It’s a grand Golf Course; it would be worth walking there even if one had the trouble of hitting a ball.
The swellings, humps and circular mounds in the cropped turf – are they ancient tombs or just bunkers? Perhaps they are both. One can fancy the surprise of some old warrior’s ghost if he saw a gentleman swiping at his grave with a niblick. But I don’t suppose he’d care.” The above is a quote from a publication on the Isle of Wight by Aubrey de Selincourt in the early 1920s. He is right in his supposition about the ‘swellings, humps and circular mounds’. Some are bunkers developed over the years since the formation of the Course in 1894 and others are indeed burial sites dating back to the Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages.
