It took owners David and Arielle four years of renovation work to get their Edwardian property up to scratch, including incorporating Lutyens-style steps into florid gardens which have deservedly won awards. Though each room is distinctive, the overall style is ‘Arts and Crafts’, and impressively overseen by Arielle – to the extent of her hand-sewing 98 headboard cushions and trawling auctions for curios, aneroid barometers, Royal Doulton figurines and chaise longues. Best of all are the lights, ranging from crystal chandeliers to birdcage lamps.

Haven Hall’s breakfast buffets are served in a bright, French-windowed room, and span sourdoughs, fruits, cereals, cafetiere coffee and regularly restocked hot plates. Eggs are cooked to order, and the local sausages are delicious. There’s no restaurant, but aperitifs can be taken in various lounges unless private functions are afoot.
