Dun Laoghaire Golf Club Co Dublin
Dun Laoghaire Golf Club hosted the 2016 Curtis Cup Match between Great Britain & Ireland (“GB&I”) and the United States of America (“USA”).
Great Britain and Ireland won the Curtis Cup for only the second time in the last 10 contests after overcoming a resurgent USA 11½-8½ in County Wicklow.
The Curtis Cup is the best known team trophy for lady amateur golfers and is organised by the LGU when it is played in GB&I. The first Curtis Cup Match was played in 1932 at the Wentworth Club in England, and was won by the American team. The match was last held in Ireland in 1996, when it was played on the Killeen Course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. The GB & I team won on that occasion.
Perhaps an ever-so-slight misnomer, the stunning Dun Laoghaire Golf Club is in fact situated close to Enniskerry in Co. Wicklow, but resides on the Dublin side of the Dublin Wicklow border, with the majestic Wicklow Mountains as its nearest neighbours. The course decamped the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire in 2007, after ninety-seven years, for the picturesque Ballyman Glen, nestled at the foot of the spectacular Sugarloaf Mountain.
Yet, despite the change of venue, the driving spirit of the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club’s founding fathers remains the Club’s guiding ethos.
Dun Laoghaire Golf Club sits nestled at the foot of the majestic Sugarloaf Mountains in the postcard-picturesque Ballyman Glen, on the borders of Counties Dublin and Wicklow. Widely acknowledged as one of Ireland’s most spectacular and challenging courses, the 27-hole championship course has been specifically designed to enable any combination of the three 9-holes courses to be played.
Designed by Hawtree Ltd., the courses are set out on 330 south facing acres. With 108 bunkers, 3.3 hectares of USGA greens, 3 hectares of USGA tees, sand capped and irrigated fairways and approaches throughout, this course is designed to be a stern test for the elite golfer from the Blue tees, and an enjoyable, accessible course from the forward tees for the average club golfer.
As you would expect from a golf club of this standing, the practice and teaching facilities at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club are, quite literally, second to none.
