After 66 years Southfield Golf Club has changed its name to Oxford Golf Club to recognise its significant City location. When the course was originally designed in 1922 by the legendary Harry Shapland Colt, it was then the Oxford University Golf Club. It became Southfield Golf Club in 1945 when it became managed predominantly by the City club.

Set within 3 miles of the Oxford City Centre and with views of the city’s ‘dreaming spires’, this undulating parkland course with many fine mature trees and an abundance of wildlife will provide the visitor with a delightful golf experience in beautiful surroundings. It is an area that is steeped in history, with golf first being played here in 1873.

The course as we see it today was designed during the early 1920s by the renowned Harry Shapland Colt. When designing the course, Colt chose to incorporate some of the original holes laid out by James Braid, which gives this course one of the finest pedigrees possible in golf course design.

There are many memorable holes, including the extremely challenging 3rd hole, justifiably Stroke index 1, as well as the par 3 12th which was described by Henry Longhurst, the voice of golf in the 60s and 70s, as “one of the best par 3 holes in the country”. With the 5th & 6th that look, feel and play like links holes, the course provides a truly comprehensive test of golf.

The first Club here was formed in 1875 by University Graduates, though Oxford Golf Club is now host to 3 different Centenary Golf Clubs;
– Oxford City Golf Club (1899)
– Oxford Ladies Golf Club (1901)
– and the oldest of them all, Oxford University Golf Club (1875).

The members and staff are not surprisingly, fiercely proud of the golf course and its history. So why not take some time to savour some of this history yourself and play this outstanding golf course. Oxford Golf Club extends a warm welcome to all golfers and societies, regardless of age, gender or ability.
