The Alwoodley Golf Club, founded in 1907, is officially recognised as one of Britain’s finest inland courses. According to “Today’s Golfer,” Alwoodley is “one of the best-kept secrets in British golf.”

The course layout forms part of Wigton Moor and is of a natural heathland character. Alwoodley’s course runs almost straight out and back, the inward nine being tougher as most of the holes are played into the fresh winds off the Yorkshire Moors. The North of the course is bordered by Wigton Moor Whin, which is particularly magnificent in autumn when the leaves are turning and rich in colour.

Much of Alwoodley’s front nine plays with the prevailing westerly wind. Unusually, the par of the course as well as the yardages vary according to the tees you play off.
Off the championship Blue tees, the course measures 6,914 yards and plays to a par of 71.

From the competition White tees, it’s 6,688 yards and a par of 72.
Off the Yellows, used for the majority of day-to-day play, it’s 6,336 yards to a par of just 70.
And from the Reds, 5,579 yards and a par of 73.

Most good scores are built on the front nine, while preservation is the order of the day, certainly from the 13th onwards. All five of the par 4s on the way in are over 400 yards from the back tees while the final short hole, the 14th, is over 200 yards.

The only one of these holes that does not play into the prevailing wind is the 16th.

One of the R&A Regional Open Qualifying courses, Alwoodley is regularly listed in the top 50 courses of Great Britain and Ireland and is included in the Top 100 Courses of the World.
