Vale of Llangollen Golf Club Denbighshire
Millions of people from all over the world know Llangollen as the home of the International Musical Eisteddfod in July. Others know it for the white water canoeing championships and others for the steam railway or even the horse drawn canal cruises over the world heritage Pontcysllte viaduct where Harrison Ford vacationed a few years back.
Others come for the superb salmon and grayling fishing on the banks of the River Dee which winds its way around this superb golf course. Nestling on the banks of the River Dee and overlooked by the glorious Welsh hills and the ancient fortress of Dinas Bran the green manicured fairways and superb greens attract golfers from far afield.
A highly favoured venue for many of the County, Professional and Welsh Amateur events this Championship course offers a great test of golf amidst a spectacular setting. With a SSS of 73 for the men and 74 for the ladies, Llangollen is a long course but, apart from a short climb after the 9th and 18th, it’s very easy walking. When best to come and play? Well you really should not miss that magical time in Spring when suddenly there is run on the ball and you feel a forgotten warmth on your back. Summer of course flatters one’s game. The greens and tees are watered and behave impeccably. Balls bound down fairways and handicaps tumble.
Autumn is a truly glorious time – it’s difficult though to keep concentration and drag your eyes from the hills around that almost seem on fire with colour. You need to pick your time in winter, wrap up well and savour the moment. Ah but how good it feels on the 19th.
