Since the dawn of golf, the owners of Winton have played an important role in developing East Lothian’s most famous golf courses because Winton’s estates stretched as far as Muirfield, Archerfield and Gullane.

The Archerfield Estate was home to Muirfield, leased to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. At that time, the Archerfield Golf Club had only 13 holes! The Nisbet Hamilton Ogilvys, Winton Estate’s owners, promoted golf through their leading roles at the pioneering golf clubs, as well as with practical initiatives such as ensuring there was a public water supply for Gullane.

East Lothian, aptly known as ‘Scotland’s Golf Coast’, boasts some of the best links and inland golf courses in the world: North Berwick, Gullane and Dunbar lead the way.

There are 22 excellent golf courses within 10 to 20 minutes’ drive of Winton Castle, including Craigielaw, Royal Musselburgh (the oldest playing golf course in the world), Longniddry, Gullane and North Berwick with friendly clubhouses.

• Broomrigg Farmhouse, our recently modernised farmhouse with 4 bedrooms (sleeps 4-8 guests), a wood fired hot tub and an electric car charger.
• Winton Cottage, an extremely comfortable country house with its own games room and a large garden, with 5 bedrooms (sleeps 5-12 guests).
• Wintonhill Farmhouse, our classic Georgian self-catering farmhouse with 6 bedrooms (sleeps 6-14 guests), complete with its own practice bunker and chipping area.

If you want to experience life in a castle, Winton Castle has 8 majestic bedrooms and can sleep up to 16 guests (scheduled to have 10 bedrooms by summer 2024). 

Despite its grandeur, Winton Castle is not overly formal, and with its open fires and family ambience, is always warm and welcoming. We call it ‘intimacy on a grand scale’, today, the castle is still the family home of the Ogilvys.

You can enjoy breakfast in our 500 year old Vaulted Cellar, grand dinners in the Cabinet Room, and relaxing in the Library, surrounded by historic Scottish Renaissance splendour. Add Winton Activities and Entertainment

For those in your party less excited about golf, Winton can put on a range of entertaining activities, from clay pigeon shooting to whisky tasting.

You can also indulge in East Lothian’s many other attractions: sweeping sandy beaches, historic castles, fishing, ebike tours, hill walking in the Lammermuirs, racing at Musselburgh Racecourse, whisky tasting at Glenkinchie Distillery, the Scottish Seabird Centre, the Museum of Flight.

And, of course, Scotland’s beautiful capital, the cultural city of Edinburgh, is only half an hour away.
